This webinar highlights some of the unique behavioral health challenges faced by older adults, as well as their families and others who care for them. Topics discussed include mood and anxiety disorders, somatoform disorders, and dementia.

  • Explain how mood and anxiety disorders may present differently and need different treatment strategies in older adults.
  • Describe how different forms of dementia are diagnosed and treated.
  • Identify the prevalence of common behavioral health disorders in residents of long-term care facilities and the need for more services for this population.

About the Speakers

Dr. Steven Wengel

Dr. Steven Wengel

MD

Dr. Wengel attended medical school at UNMC and went on to complete his general psychiatry residency training in the Creighton-Nebraska Psychiatry Residency program. He then did a one-year fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at UNMC. He has been practicing geriatric psychiatry at UNMC since 1991 and sees patients in his office, via telehealth, and at several Omaha-area long-term care facilities.

Dr. George Blankenau

Dr. George Blankenau

MD

Dr. Blankenau is a Psychiatry Resident at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A graduate of UNMC and the University of Kansas, he has earned the Ember Award for teaching and the Frank J. Menolascino Award. Dr. Blankenau’s clinical interests center on geriatric psychiatry and addiction medicine. His academic interests include education of medical students and residents. His background includes published research on adolescent neuroimaging.
